Cameron Eittreim April 1, 2022

Luxury cars depreciate heavily as soon as they leave the lot. This means that sometimes, purchasing a used luxury sports car can be a fruitful endeavor. Oftentimes, you can get a car that was once $100,000 or more for pennies on the dollar. The sports car market is constantly evolving, and new models are being released every year. This means it’s not uncommon to have a new model debut on the heels of a previous one. But drivers can also find cheap, fast sports cars on the used car market.

In the past few decades, performance cars have steadily increased in quality. You can get a used sports car that oftentimes performs as good or better than brand-new models on the market. We looked at 25 used sports cars that you can get for dirt cheap nowadays.

25: Lexus SC400

The Lexus SC400 is a car that was over-engineered to perfection. When it came out, the Lexus brand was a brand-new project by Toyota and the company wanted it to succeed. To succeed, the cars had to have the same high-quality materials and design as their German competition. Stepping behind the wheel of the SC400 is an experience like no other. Even today, the car is fast and performs better than you’d ever expect a 30-year-old car to drive (via Car & Driver).

The V8 engine in the Lexus was and still is one of the best engines Toyota has ever developed. Many of the car’s underpinnings were also shared with the Toyota Supra, which made its performance exceptional. Even by today’s standards, the Lexus SC400 is a stellar deal and the performance and design of the car are timeless. Few sports cars have managed to hold up to the test of time as the Lexus SC400 has.

24: Chrysler Crossfire

Released on the heels of the Mercedes-Benz merger, the Crossfire was a blend of Mercedes engineering and Chrysler exterior design. The Crossfire was panned by those in the automotive press for its styling, but the car had some decent performance to offer. In the SRT trim, the Crossfire offered a stylish package that boasted Mercedes-Benz engineering underneath. The car was an SLK roadster model in Chrysler skin (via Autoblog).

Sadly, the Crossfire was not a sales success and the car faltered when it came to reliability. Consumers were more interested in a comparable that was on the market that offered more traditional styling. When it came to a sports car that consumers could relate to, the Crossfire never gained any ground.

23: 1997 Audi A8

The Audi automotive brand is almost synonymous with automotive performance. The company has a storied history in the rally car and overarching motorsports world. Audi’s engineering is something that has made Audi a brand that’s quite revered. The 1990s were a transitional time for the brand and the A8 was one of the cars they made during this transitional shift. The elongated design of the performance coupe made it attractive to luxury car shoppers (via Edmunds).

The performance of the V8 engine is still powerful and exciting to this day, which is why the car has experienced a resurgence. Because of the bullet-proof engineering of the car, the ride is still quiet and comfortable. The resale prices of the Audi A8 models have continually gone down in price, making this car an affordable option that’s also fun to drive.

22: Lexus LS400

As with the SC400, the engineering that went into the LS400 sedan was top-notch. This car is a sports sedan in every sense of the word with a powerful V8 engine stuffed under the hood. Even a used LS400 that is 30 years old, performs better than most new cars. Between its off-the-line acceleration and the incredible sound deadening in the interior, the LS400 is a great car that’s exciting to drive and easy on the wallet (via Car Gurus).

When it came to the design of the LS400, the car was largely unchanged for a decade. This means that most of the production years are very similar to each other. Finding an affordable used sports car is getting more difficult with age, but the LS400 is a car that is constantly fun to drive and offers a great deal of performance for the price.

As with most used luxury and exotic cars, the Boxster has maintained a fairly affordable resale price. Spending around $5K will fetch you a moderately used Boxster that still has a lot of life left in it. Many of these cars were initially lease models, which means they were mostly well-maintained.

It’s a legendary model sold in the 1990s and its performance is renowned. This was a car from the era where Mercedes models were over-engineered to perfection. As with most used luxury cars, the resale value for the 500E is affordable, unless you are looking at an ultra-low mileage example (via Motor Trend).

The 500E was popular because of the short wheelbase and excellent handling characteristics. When it came to engineering during this era, Mercedes was unmatched in terms of quality. Few used cars provide the same thrill behind the wheel as the 500E, which is why the car has maintained its popularity with enthusiasts.

Used Jaguars are not the first thing that comes to mind for most enthusiasts who are looking for an exciting ride. But the 1990s were an underrated time for the brand where these cars were quite good. The XJS is a car that you’ll seldom see on the road anymore because they weren’t very reliable. This was one of the first Corvette models to use a fuel-injected engine, and there are various specialty models made throughout this time (via Car Survey).

The C4 Corvette model was the precursor to the C5 platform, which was one of the most popular Corvette models of all time. The last model years for the C4 were the best, and the car is as close to a modern Corvette as you can get for the price range. Between the design characteristics and the performance, the C4 is one of the best bargains in the Corvette world.

17: Volkswagen Phaeton

Volkswagen was on a profitable track in the mid-2000s after the success of the New Beetle and the redesigned Jetta. The next move by the company was to market a high-end luxury sedan model. This sports sedan was designed in a completely new facility and was built by hand. The car shared underpinnings with the Bentley Continental, which meant that the performance was quite exceptional. The Phaeton was never a sales success even though the car was a high-quality model (via Top Gear).

At the time the Phaeton was new, the car was well above the $100,000.00 price tag, whereas nowadays the car has depreciated quite nicely. 14: Mazda 929

If you look at the Mazda lineup in the ’90s you won’t miss much. The brand was going through a lot of changes and the cars were about as bland as you could imagine. That is, until you looked at the 929, a sedan with all the appointments you’d expect a Mazda to have. The performance of this car is an exception, and the car has still managed to hold up well even by today’s standards (via Cars.com).

The Q45 was a V8-powered sedan with the underpinnings of the Nissan 350Z sports car, which meant it drove well (via Consumer Reports).

Because Infiniti models are generally undervalued to begin with the Q45 can be had for a fraction of the price that it was when it was new. You’ll get stellar performance and the signature reliability that enthusiasts recognize the Infiniti brand for. The styling of the Q45 is unique, and the car is rare so you’ll seldom see another one on the road like it.

The short wheelbase gives the car that same open-road feeling that the Mazda Miata does and the rev-happy engine is begging you to drive it.
