Futuristic Cars Of 2022 & Beyond That Will Change The Auto World

Cameron Eittreim February 28, 2022

The automotive industry is one of the fastest-changing industries in the world. Every year, futuristic cars and trucks are conceptualized and released onto the market. Part of the fun of following the automotive industry is the anticipation of future car models. A lot of the time these vehicles are introduced to the public first as concept cars and then brought into production. The automotive market is going to change a lot between now and 2026, with many future models that are going to completely change how we drive.

Big, burly gasoline-powered engines are on the way out, and EVs are on the way in. How will consumers adapt to all these changes? There will be many things that we will enjoy about the next generation of automotive design. Whether you are curious to see how Tesla brings the Cybertruck to the market, or how Toyota will continue to innovate their iconic brands, there is a lot of movement in the automotive industry right now. We looked at futuristic cars coming in 2022 and beyond.

30: 2022 Aston Martin Vanquish

The Aston Martin brand has made some serious evolution in the last decade and it no longer competes directly with other supercars. Instead, the brand is being positioned as an ultra-luxurious option geared toward potential supercar enthusiasts. Aston has always been the upper echelon and an exotic supercar is no exception (via Car & Driver).

There are quite a few vehicles in the pipeline right now, but the 2022 Aston Martin Vanquish stands out for many reasons. The styling is beautiful from the renders that we’ve seen, and the addition of a manual transmission makes this an authentic sports car. If a serious competitor against the Corvette is something you have dreamed about, then the Vanquish might just be that and more.

29: 2022 Cadillac Escala

No, we didn’t forget the last couple of letters in Escalade. Cadillac is on the verge of releasing the 2022 Cadillac Escala, a premium sports sedan. Although the automotive industry was under the impression that Cadillac was exiting the passenger car business, the Escala has changed that narrative again (via Car & Driver).

Although the Escala was initially slated to use the CT6 platform, plans have changed. The Escala will now be a completely electric sedan as GM forges ahead with stiffer competition for the Tesla brand. The Cadillac brand hasn’t experienced a lot of success in the electric car arena, but that doesn’t mean the Escala won’t make it.

28: 2022 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

The Corvette lineup has been evolving dramatically over the past two decades. The car has gone from being a hardcore sports car to a more exotic-oriented vehicle. The mid-engined design initially sent shock waves through Corvette traditionalists. But since then, the car has grown to cultivate a brand new generation of enthusiasts (via Car & Driver).

Although V8 engines are being phased out across the pond at Dodge, that doesn’t mean GM is ready to throw in the towel yet. The next Corvette will have a DOHC V8 that pumps out a menacing 625 horsepower. There is even talk of an all-electric Corvette further down the line.

27: 2022 Honda Civic / Type R

Over the past decade, the Honda Civic has been on an upward trend toward popularity. Although the compact car was always popular, the past few years have been incredibly fruitful for the brand. The Type R, which replaced the SI, has always been a specialty model for Honda, and people will pay a premium for it (via Car & Driver).

As the brand continues to adapt to the next generation of performance car enthusiasts, there will be subtle changes to the brand. The next incarnation of the Type R will also compete with the upcoming Acura Integra. The same 1.5 and 2.0-liter engines will carry over from the previous design of the car.

26: 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5

Hyundai is an affordable automaker, so it only makes sense that the company would try to introduce an affordable EV option. The Ioniq 5 is an affordable five-door hatchback that will change the way people view EV models. Hyundai is taking a more streamlined approach to the EV with the Ioniq in only the way that Hyundai can (via Car & Driver).

Unlike the awkward-looking EV models that came before it such as the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Bolt, the Ioniq is an attractive-looking car. You might even mistake it for a sports hatchback, which is what Hyundai was going for. The Ioniq 5 looks to be an affordable EV option that should resonate well with consumers.

25: 2022 Infiniti Flagship EV

Just when you thought the Infiniti brand was out in the cold, they come up with something new. It appears Infiniti will also enter the EV race. The Infiniti EV sedan will be based on the Q Inspiration concept shown in 2018. It will be interesting to see how much the sedan borrows from the styling of the existing Q sedan (via Car & Driver).

The Infiniti brand has been suffering from sales decline for almost a decade now. Could an EV elevate the brand back to some sort of normalcy in the luxury car segment? Lexus has been dominant and Acura is moving toward performance car shoppers now. The Infiniti Flagship EV is expected to hit the market sometime in late 2022.

24: 2022 Kia EV6

Sharing a platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 will also hit the market. The Kia model will be similar to the Hyundai, albeit with a sportier exterior that is in line with the current Kia design language. The plan to release an affordable EV onto the market by Hyundai is smart, especially as gas prices soar (via Car & Driver).

The Kia EV6 will be a hatchback model like the Ioniq 5, which is another great option for families who might want an EV. The styling and the one-of-a-kind design will make the Kia and Hyundai options serious competitors for Tesla. These are electric cars that the average person can afford and enjoy.

23: 2022 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class

The Mercedes-Benz SL-Class has been around for a while now. As far as roadsters go, this is one of the most revered in the segment. In the last decade, the SL-Class has sort of lost the prestige it once had. The competition is so fierce for high-end roadsters nowadays that the SL has gone by the wayside (via Car & Driver).

Nevertheless, there will be a complete redesign planned for 2022-23. The styling and performance will return to the SL’s origins. There is no doubt that Mercedes will pull out all the stops to make this roadster better than ever. With a new SL on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how the car returns to dominance.

22: 2022 Maserati MC20

Maserati is a brand that has been outdated for some time, but the automaker made some waves with the MC20 on the horizon. This is an entirely new type of sports car for the brand, and it gets a lot of its styling from Ferrari. With a 3.0-liter V6 good for 621 horsepower, there is no denying the MC20 packs a serious punch (via Car & Driver).

It’s nice to see the Maserati brand return to an honest performance car. The MC20 is beautiful and should give the brand solid footing with enthusiasts. With the Ferrari engineering that has always been underneath the Maserati brand, it’s sort of a hidden gem of the automotive industry.

21: 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQE

Mercedes-Benz has been slow and steady when it comes to releasing a dedicated electric sedan. This is a good thing because the brand is looking to take Tesla’s throne when it comes to the highest electric cars. The EQE will be a large sedan that will likely be an electrified version of the S-Class (via Car & Driver).

Because it’s a Mercedes, there will be many luxury features and the ride will be pleasant. Mercedes is still new to competing in the field of EV models, so it will be interesting to see how the automotive public reacts to the EQE. The EQE EV will be released sometime toward the end of 2022.

20: 2022 Nissan 400Z

The Nissan 370Z has become quite long in the tooth, and the GT-R is no better. But the redesigned 400Z is on the way. The car will borrow heavily from design elements of the past to bring us a truly authentic Z model. After Toyota botched the release of the Supra and let fans down, it will be up to Nissan to carry the sports car banner (via Car & Driver).

The Z Pronto concept that this car will be based on covered many important basics that enthusiasts in this segment are looking for. A manual transmission is a must-have, and the rear-wheel-drive design only adds to the anticipation. It will be interesting to see how Nissan can grab hold of the sports car segment with this car.

19: 2022 Tesla Roadster

The original Tesla Roadster was a groundbreaking car that launched the Tesla brand as a whole. It was also the car that almost bankrupted Elon Musk in the process, but his love prevailed, and Tesla became an automotive dynasty. The original Tesla Roadster has come and gone, and EV technology has come a long way since then (via Motor 1).

The next Tesla Roadster will be more of an enthusiast car and less of a working concept, like the first generation of EVs were. This will be a car that can compete with the world’s best sports cars in terms of performance. The styling will also be drastically different as Musk tries to bring even more enthusiasts into the fray.

18: 2022 Toyota 86

The first-generation Toyota 86 was sort of a surprise for the auto world. Toyota hadn’t sold a sports car since the Celica was discontinued. The 86 was fun to drive, and for what it was worth quite affordable. However, the first generation of the 86 has been on the market for a while now, and it is time for a redesign (via Motor 1).

With Subaru’s recent unveiling of the BRZ, there is no doubt Toyota will debut a new 86 model this year. With the disappointment that the Supra was for enthusiasts, it will be interesting to see how the 86 redeems the brand. The 86 has been a reasonable selling car for Toyota, so the company probably won’t mess with success too much.

17: 2022 Toyota GR Corolla

True competition from Toyota for the Honda Civic SI has been decades in the making. Enthusiasts have been vying for a Toyota Corolla sport model for a long time. Although the Yaris GR isn’t going to make it onto our shores, the Corolla GR is expected to come out sometime in 2022-23. The car will use a hatchback design and likely have a turbocharged engine (via Motor 1).

The interesting stand out feature about the GR Corolla is that it has a six speed stick shift. The styling will also be different from the Corolla model we have today. Toyota has been delving back into the performance arena, and it will be interesting to see how the GR stands out from the crowd.

16: 2023 Genesis Essentia

What started as the Hyundai Equus has evolved into a completely separate luxury car brand known as Genesis. The original Genesis models were evolutionary for Hyundai in terms of quality and refinement. The Essentia looks to build on an already stellar reputation with another impressive two-door sports car (via Motor 1).

This will be another all-electric vehicle, as Genesis follows an array of other automakers ready to jump into the EV market. From a performance standpoint, the Essentia will definitely perform well. The Genesis brand continues to evolve, with every new model the Essentia will stand out from the crowd.

15: 2023 Hyundai RM20 N

The Hyundai Veloster has been a breakout success for the Hyundai brand but it’s finally time for a redesign. The next generation RM20 N will take the same performance formula that the Veloster N brought to the table, and turn it up a notch. The interesting thing about this turbocharged hatchback is that it will compete with the GR Corolla (via Motor 1).

Hyundai has been implementing new design elements that will give the RM20 N some of the best handling in the segment. With the market for hot hatch sports cars heating up more every year, the 2023 Hyundai RM20 N is a preferable choice for many consumers. Can Hyundai pull off a victory in the fun segment? Time will tell.

14: 2023 Mazda6

The Mazda6 has been on the market for almost two decades and has achieved modest sales success. The Mazda6 is that car that you know is there and offers a more refined ride than the standard Honda and Toyota fare. While it doesn’t have the name recognition as the Accord, the sedan has always been fun to drive (via Motor 1).

It has been said Mazda will go for the premium luxury sedan market this time around. Could the Mazda6 be rotary powered this time around? There has been no indication of that yet, but Mazda is experimenting with new Rotary engine designs that it could use in the future.

13 : 2023 Porsche 911 Hybrid

Could a high performance sports car be eco-friendly? Well, if you are the folks at Porsche, then the answer is yes. The upcoming 2023 Porsche 911 Hybrid will use the same technology Porsche used with the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. Now, just because this is an eco-friendly sports car doesn’t mean it lacks performance (via Motor 1).

The 911 Hybrid will potentially have upwards of 700 horsepower. The fact that automakers are slowly building more eco-friendly options for enthusiasts is great. The current 911 is a great car with a solid foundation. It will be interesting to see how Porsche puts all this technology together in a single package.

12: 2025 Dodge Challenger/Charger

The current generation of the Challenger and Charger has been around since 2010. That’s almost an eternity when you think of the automotive market, yet somehow both cars have managed to maintain respectable sales numbers. Dodge has said the two cars will stick around in current form until at least 2024 (via Motor 1).

The next generation of the Challenger will borrow from the classic styling that the current model did. But there is no denying that the next generation of the cars will be electrified, as Dodge has announced it is cancelling production of the Hemi V8 engine. The future of muscle cars will be different than the vehicles of today.

11: 2025 Cadillac Celestiq

Although it’s been rumored that GM will exit the passenger car market to focus on SUVs and trucks, the EV segment is heating up. GM will release the 2025 Cadillac Celestiq, which will be a flagship sedan and an EV. The hunger for a flagship luxury sedan among enthusiasts and brand loyalists is still there (via Motor 1).

Cadillac will be going head to head with offerings from Lexus and many other luxury automakers. The Celestiq will use the Ultium battery platform as the base for the car. This is the platform on which GM bases many of their EV models. There will be plenty of luxury and drivers can expect the price tag to be astronomical.

10: 2025 Lamborghini Sedan

Lamborghini has been flirting with the idea of building a super sedan for decades. Although now more than ever, the concept seems to be coming to reality. The upcoming Lamborghini sedan will likely utilize a lot of the styling that Porsche did with the Panamera. The Lambo sedan could use either a V8 or a V12 design, and there will likely be a hybrid drivetrain (via Motor 1).

One rumor is that the Lamborghini sedan could use the same base as the Taycan. Time will tell how this project turns out. There is a huge marketshare for the Lamborghini sedan to overtake, and if the design is good enough, enthusiasts will flock to it. There are few cars that could compete with an authentic Lamborghini sedan.

9: 2023 Ford Fusion Active

The Fusion was one of the best-selling sedans Ford has released in a long time. Unfortunately, the Fusion has since been discontinued, but there are rumors it will return in an SUV form. This isn’t surprising considering Toyota has released the Corolla Cross and other automakers are following suit (via Motor 1).

The Fusion Active will follow the same formula as the Mustang Mach-E. Instead of being performance oriented, this model will be geared toward outdoor enthusiasts. The Fusion Active will offer many unique features. The release date hasn’t yet come to the light, but the Fusion Active is said to be in development.

8: 2023 Ferrari Purosangue

A Ferrari SUV is also in the works, after the company has seen the success of the Lamborghini URUS SUV. The Purosangue has been purposed as an SUV with either a V8 or V12 engine. It hasn’t been said if the car will be a hybrid or feature a turbocharged engine instead (via Motor 1).

The Purosangue’s pricing will likely exceed $350,000, which is obviously expensive. But the market for these exotic sports car styled SUV’s will only continue to grow as more luxury automakers jump into the fray. If you are a fan of Ferrari models, then the Ferrari Purosangue will be highly sought after.

7: 2023 Lexus LQ

Nearly two decades ago, Lexus completely changed the luxury car segment by introducing the RX300 crossover. They were the first brand to introduce a luxury crossover to the marketplace, way before crossovers were popular. The LQ will be the next generation of this concept by introducing electrification to the mix (via US News).

An EV electric SUV will be a much more comfortable option than Tesla has available right now. If you want something that isn’t too extreme and will provide excellent reliability, then the Lexus LQ is going to be a great choice. The LQ is something different than anything else in the Lexus portfolio right now.

6: 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L

Since the start of the SUV boom, the Grand Cherokee has been a luxurious option. The next generation of the Grand Cherokee will build on that same success. Going further into the premium segment, the Grand Cherokee L will be completely redesigned from the ground up (via US News).

The upcoming design will still utilize the 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter Hemi V8 engines. Time will tell if there will be a turbo diesel option. Jeep is also introducing the Grand Wagoneer, so the Grand Cherokee will also have competition in house. The next generation of the Grand Cherokee L will be a pleasant mix of comfort and luxury.

5: 2023 Porsche Macan EV

In addition to introducing a few new hybrid sports cars, Porsche will also introduce the Macan EV. A complete EV sports car will be an interesting concept, and Porsche will be head-to-head with Tesla. The end result will be a growing competition between the two brands for electric sports car supremacy (via US News).

The Porsche Macan EV is part of a triple-pronged approach by Volkswagen, and it will be sold alongside the Audi Q5 and the VW ID BUZZ. This automaker has been toying with the idea of these EV models for a while now, so it will be interesting to watch. There are few compact SUV models that are potentially as appealing as the Macan EV.

4: 2022 Rivian R1S

Rivian has been in the mix for the past couple of years as the first official electric EV to be unveiled. Competition is heating up between the start-up and Tesla, but that doesn’t mean Rivian is letting up. The R1S will debut in 2022 and will be an off-road oriented SUV model that is also fully electric (via US News).

The rise of electric EV SUV models has been slow and steady, but some offerings are well appointed. The R1S will be a great option that offers many unique features for the price. Alongside the interesting design will also be many features for the price and excellent mileage range.

3: 2022 Volkswagen ID Buzz

The return of the original Volkswagen van has been big news for the past couple of years. But what makes it even more unique of a return is the fact that it will be an EV. The ID Buzz borrows heavily from the Volkswagen bus that made the company famous in the 1960s. The styling will very much be themed the same way as the original (via US News).

Volkswagen’s EV technology has come a far way and the ID Buzz is going to be a welcomed addition. While most EV cars are sort of cold looking and futuristic the ID Buzz is going to be a friendly looking reminder of a better time. The ID Buzz is slated to hit the market in 2022-23 and will have a lot of unique appeal.

2: 2023 Lotus SUV

Perhaps the most unique news that is coming is that Lotus is jumping into the SUV race as well. Similar to how Lamborghini and Ferrari is doing Lotus is also going to bring a performance oriented SUV to the mix. The 2023 Lotus SUV is going to borrow heavily from the styling of the sports car models (via US News).

The Lotus brand is known for excellent handling and driving characteristics. We’re sure that the Lotus SUV will bring the best of what the brand has to offer to the table. Nicknamed the Lambda, this is sure to be one of the most unique performance offerings to hit the market. Lotus has never missed the mark when it comes to performance.

1: 2024 Ram Dakota

Chrysler Fiat has all but confirmed that the Dakota line will be making a return to the market. The midsized pickup truck segment is heating up and the Ram brand isn’t a player in it yet. That should change around the year 2024 when the new Dakota model is introduced. There is a lot of mystique in the air surrounding this model (via US News).

It has been said that the Dakota will share the same platform as the Jeep Gladiator but that hasn’t been confirmed. Nevertheless, the original Dakota was a smash success for Dodge when it was first released. With the right design, the next generation of the Dakota could be a sales success as well.
