There was a time in the not so distant past where Oldsmobile was a major force in the automotive industry. The Toronado was also one of the most influential cars, showcasing a lot of the new technology. The 1966 Toronado was unique for its ambitious design and seemingly breathtaking performance (via Top Speed).
This is a particular era from the automotive industry for which Leno has a soft spot. The 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado was one of the best selling cars at GM from this time period. The tornado would also introduce other firsts to the automotive industry. In the 1980s, the tornado was the first automobile to have a driver airbag.
Although the Tesla is the hot new electric car of the world, the Tesla is far from the first electric car on the road. Even long before the GM EV1 was a thing, there were electric cars made before. The Baker Electric is one of the first official electric cars in the world, and Jay Leno is the proud owner of it (via Top Speed).
When you look at the Baker Electric, you see a car that closely resembles the other cars from this era. Its compact design and cramped interior are the most obvious things you’ll notice about this car. Leno has kept his Baker Electric in fairly original condition and the car has a high valuation on it.
In addition to the Baker Electric he owns, Leno also owns a 1914 Detroit Electric. Another interesting electric car from the early days of automotive innovation, the 1914 Detroit Electric, was well-built and popular. The 1914 Detroit Electric had a very short range, as most electric cars from this era were seemingly experimental (via Top Speed).
The convertible top of the car made it a unique offering at the time. Most of the cars from this time period were still evolving from the horse and buggy days. Detroit Electric was a well known coach building company at the time. There are a few early electric cars worth noting and the 1914 Detroit Electric is one of them.
The cool thing about Leno is that he doesn’t just own the vehicles in his collection, he knows about the history behind every car and truck he has. The 1946 Shell Oil Truck is a unique vehicle that he wanted to add just because of the history behind it. Oil tankers were the vehicles that fueled the early growth of America (via Top Speed).
The style of the 1946 Shell Oil Truck is reminiscent of large commercial trucks from this era. Anything that came from the Shell Oil company from this time period is a collector’s item. Leno enjoys driving unique commercial vehicles like this one almost as much as he enjoys driving the unique sports cars in his collection.
Open-wheeled sports cars have been increasing in popularity over the last year. The Ariel Atom is a relatively recent open-wheeled sports car designed to look like a futuristic cruiser. Ariel Motor Company built the car, and it was designed to be a featherweight driving experience. The old adage that the lighter weight a vehicle is, the faster it drives is true here (via Top Speed).
Leno likes to go fast but he also likes an interesting driving experience, which is why the Ariel Atom is a favorite vehicle in his collection. He enjoys driving it and has shown it off on an episode or two of Jay Leno’s garage. There are few open wheeled roadsters on the market that are as unique as the Ariel Atom.
What kind of performance can you get out of a 95-year-old steam powered car? According to Leno, a lot. The 1925 Doble E-20 was a car that was purpose built when it first hit the market in 1925. It was a performance car in every sense of the word, and naturally Jay Leno had to pick this one up (via Top Speed).
The 1925 Doble E-20 is perhaps one of the most unique pure roadsters in Jay Leno’s collection. When it comes to an interesting steamed powered car, the Doble E-20 is about as unique as you can get.
You actually don’t see many Fiat models in Jay Leno’s collection, but that’s okay, because the 1917 Fiat Botafogo is a unique and historic car. This is one of the first Fiat models sold to the public, and one of the most historic for the brand in general. Leno has owned this car for over a decade, and he’ll seldom show it off (via Top Speed).
When you look at the Fiat Botafogo, it doesn’t look like the average Fiat models we are used to seeing. But looks can be deceiving, and the 1917 Fiat Botafogo is a historical roadster that’s also a blast to drive. Leno has featured this car on several episodes of his hit TV show, and he also tours it at various car shows.
Classic Lincoln models have been rising in value in recent years, and the 1966 Lincoln Continental is no exception. Jay Leno doesn’t own many Lincoln models, but the ones he own are special. The 1966 Lincoln Continental resonates with Leno because he talks about how his father owned one of these cars (via Top Speed).
The 1966 Lincoln Continental owned by Leno has been kept in fairly immaculate condition. There aren’t many modifications done to the car. Routine maintenance and a clean paint job are the most obvious portions of this car. Nevertheless, the 1966 Lincoln Continental is a stellar car.
Jay Leno owns a few novelty cars designed by him and the Light Car Company Rocket is one of these. The lightweight car looks more like a box car racer than anything else that you might see. The performance of the car is amazing and fun to drive (via Top Speed).
Leno hasn’t done anything to this car since he bought it, and he enjoys taking it out on the road from time to time. Compact concept cars are some of the most fun to drive, and Jay Leno has a blast driving the Light Car Company Rocket around. Time will tell if he adds more cars like this to his collection, or if he is done collecting the novelties.
