Chevy Guys Don’t Want You To Know These Mustang Facts

Cameron Eittreim June 20, 2023

The Ford Mustang is one of the most well-known and best-selling sports cars in the world. It was also the car that ignited the entire pony car segment. General Motors created the Camaro in direct response to the Mustang and the success it was having. The Mustang has been in continuous production since it first hit the market, whereas Camaro production ceased in 2002 and returned in 2009. The rivalry between the two automotive brands has been fierce with both Ford and Chevy guys being extremely loyal to their brands.

Camaro owners are often very protective of their brand and will defend the car at all costs. But the Mustang also has a lot of great attributes that should be considered by drivers. There have been many different special editions and body styles of the Mustang released over the years. With the V8 performance and affordable price tag for most of the generations, the Mustang has endured the test of time. We looked at the best things about the Mustang that Chevy guys don’t want you to know.

The Camaro Has Been Discontinued Twice

The first and most important thing about the Mustang brand has been its pure staying power. Production has remained continuous since 1964, albeit there have been some mistakes along the way like the Pinto-based Mustang II. The Camaro on the other hand was first discontinued in 2002 and now it’s been announced that the Camaro will be discontinued in 2024.

The Mustang, on the other hand, has never been discontinued and the brand is doing better than ever. With the Coyote V8 engine under the hood, the Mustang packs a huge amount of power and a reputation like no other. On the other hand, Chevy guys don’t like to admit the fact that the Camaro is continuously getting discontinued by GM.

It Was Almost The Cougar

The Mustang was almost named something else entirely, and that was the Cougar. If that nameplate seems familiar it’s because the Mercury variant of the Mustang used that nameplate. The Cougar ended up being a luxury car toward the end of its lifespan, whereas the Mustang stuck to its pony car roots. We’re not sure if the Cougar name would’ve caught on as well as the Mustang did.

The Mustang brand name is something that has become a life of its own with Mustang enthusiast clubs all over the world. There has always been a community around the Mustang that the Camaro just couldn’t compete with. Mustang owners love their cars and a different nameplate probably wouldn’t have worked as well.

22,000 Mustangs Were Sold On The First Day

The Mustang was the car that fueled the pony car segment and essentially started the whole movement. This is something that Camaro owners always have to live with, because if it wasn’t for the Mustang, no one would have the Camaro either. The idea behind the Mustang was to build a lightweight, consumer-friendly car.

It ended up being a hit with men and women and the car was one of the biggest hits that Ford ever had. The car inspired a new generation of drivers who wanted something fun and lightweight to drive. The fun cars that we have today can all trace their roots back to the Mustang’s successful run.

The Mustang Created The Pony Car

Take one look at the Mustang’s logo and what do you see? A pony, which is the sole reason why the Mustang and Camaro are called pony cars. The Mustang created an entire segment, and it’s a segment that the Mustang still dominates today. The pony car was a completely new type of automobile at a time when they were still large land yachts.

Everything about the Mustang was fun and energetic, which made consumers increasingly favorable towards the car. The birth of the pony car changed the automotive industry forever and even though the Camaro was a popular car, it was nowhere near as important as the Mustang was to the automotive world.

There’s Symbolism To The Logo

There’s a reason why the pony car segment has its name and it’s because of the Mustang’s logo. The Ford Mustang uses a horse for the logo and that’s what ignited the entire segment. Some competitors came along like the Camaro which didn’t have as iconic of a logo. The Camaro has a bold typeface if anything, and the Firebird had the flaming chicken on the hood.

But nothing resonated with consumers as the Mustang did and that continues to do today. Even the Mustang Mach-E carried on the tradition of the horse logo. Showing the world that even an EV can continue with an iconic brand name. There aren’t a lot of logos that have been as iconic as the Mustang.

The First Mustang Was Sold By Accident

The first Mustang ever produced was a convertible model and it was actually sold by accident. The car was issued as a pilot test car that was used by a driver for 10,000 miles and at the end of the trial it was accidentally sold. The car eventually made its way back to Ford and it currently sits in a museum that the company owns.

These cars were an important milestone for Ford so naturally having one of the originals was important. There weren’t a lot of other cars from the era that created an entire segment like the Mustang did. The car was a well-built piece of machinery from the start, with styling to match.

The Mustang Is a Popular Movie Car

If you haven’t noticed, the Mustang appears in a lot of movies. Whether it’s Steve McQueen and the “Bullitt” Mustang or Eleanor from “Gone in Sixty Seconds,” the Mustang is a popular movie car and one that many directors wanted. “John Wick” is another well-known movie franchise that showed off a mint-condition Mustang.

Its beautiful styling and impressive performance of the car make it an obvious choice. The classic and historic styling coupled with the bold performance makes it an obvious choice. Plus, who can argue with one of the most influential sports cars in history? The Mustang has left an undeniable mark on Hollywood.

The Mustang Broke $1 Million For a Sales Price

Older Mustangs are rare cars, especially first-generation models. But the Mustang’s partnership with Carroll Shelby meant that there are a few very rare Mustang models out there. The Shelby Super Snake sold at auction for over a million dollars, therefore making it one of the most expensive Mustang sales ever recorded.

Of course, the super snake had a lot of performance upgrades as well, a big part of the reason it was so highly regarded. The styling of the car was influenced by the Ford GT sports car as well as European roadsters from the same period.

Shelby Performance

The Super Snake wasn’t the only Carroll Shelby partnership that hit the road. There were other models along the way as well. The Shelby name has appeared on Mustangs for decades and with every generation there is something special. The Camaro never had a partnership with an iconic person like Carroll Shelby other than the Yenko.

This meant that the Mustang has something that the Camaro just doesn’t offer. No matter how hard Chevy guys want to boast there will never be a Shelby Camaro. This partnership was forged out of Carroll Shelby’s love of the Mustang. A love that lasted up until his death as he designed one of the last Shelby Mustangs ever to hit the road.

Global Reach

The Mustang isn’t just cool in America and the car has reached the entire globe with popularity. You’ll find variations of the Mustang in just about every corner of the world and it’s one of the few “world” cars that Ford has ever sold. The unique styling and the bold performance of the Mustang have made it far more popular than anything else on the road.

Ford created something truly special when the Mustang hit the market and it doesn’t look like it is going to lose steam anytime soon. The car is both beautiful to look at and fun to drive, and as long as drivers love a fun ride the Mustang will be around for decades to come. The car is a piece of Americana like baseball and other iconic pieces of our culture.
