19. Nick Mason

The drummer from the legendary band Pink Floyd was a car fanatic long before he became famous. In fact, he spent his early hard-earned cash on cars and started collecting them. Mason was one of the first rock stars with a serious car collection and also a maverick car expert. Back in the early ’70s, he bought numerous classic Ferraris. That was at a time when people didn’t appreciate classic cars and they weren’t as expensive as they are today.

Among the cars in his garage is the legendary Ferrari 250 GTO. It’s also officially the most expensive car in the world with a price of over $38 million. Who knows how much Mason’s GTO is ultimately worth with its celebrity connection.

18. Janis Joplin

Legendary classic rock and blues singer Janis Joplin had a hit with her song, Mercedes Benz. But in real life, her motoring passions were motorcycles and her crazy-painted Porsche 356 convertible. Janis was living in San Francisco at the height of hippy culture and a local artist painted her car with unique murals to show the true spirit of the times.

Unfortunately, she died young in 1970, but her legacy will live on forever. They also preserved her car and keep it in a museum.

17. Keith Moon

Although Keith Moon, drummer for the legendary English band, The Who, died in 1978, his musical legacy and stories of erratic behavior still live on. He was one of the best drummers in the history of rock, as well as one of the craziest rockstars on and off the stage. Moon was also an avid car collector. During the ’70s, he bought numerous cars, from the big Mercedes 600 and Rolls Royce Phantom, to various sports cars. In the later part of the ’70s, Moon developed a taste for custom hot rods, owning several interesting models.

But the most memorable story is about his Ferrari 246 Dino. Keith was having a beer in a pub when he saw a group of teenagers admiring his car. He approached them and handed them the keys to his car, telling them they could take it for a spin. When the teenagers didn’t return after a while, he began walking home only to find his precious Ferrari in a ditch by the side of the road.

16. Jimi Hendrix

Famous genius guitar player, James Marshall Hendrix or Jimi, wasn’t really a car guy. However, he was surrounded by cool machinery when his career took off in the late ’60s. His first taste of fame came when he moved to London and started The Jimi Hendrix Experience. There, he received a small Lotus Elan sports car.

But when Jimi returned to the U.S. in 1968, his record company gave him several Corvettes. He crashed all but the last one, a gray coupe he drove until his untimely death in 1970. Unfortunately, today, nobody knows the VIN number of Hendrix’s Corvette, so no one knows whether the car is still around or not.

15. Mick Jagger

The Rolling Stones rose to fame in the early ’60s as an interesting antipode to the Beatles’ well-groomed image. The Stones were a bunch of loud and rugged individuals with a signature sound and lyrics rougher than their colleagues from Liverpool. However, fans seemed to like them just as much.

Soon, the members of the band had enough fame and fortune to pursue the finer things in life. Mick Jagger was the first to splurge on a new Aston Martin in 1966. Unfortunately, it wasn’t long before he damaged it in a slight fender bender in London.

During her career and marriage to Sonny Bono, the two were given two matching 1966 Mustangs that the legendary customizer, George Barris designed and fabricated. He called them His and Hers.

The two Mustangs shared the same design but had different details. However, during her solo career that started in the 1970s, Cher started to buy and use Ferraris, with the 246 GT Dino being her first one.

13. Elvis Presley

There are rock star car collections and there is Elvis Presley’s car collection. The Elvis car obsession deserves a whole book rather than just a couple of paragraphs in an article because he was the definitive rock star car collector. In fact, he was more than that. He was a car hoarder, as well as the King of Rock. Elvis started buying expensive cars, mainly Cadillacs as soon as he became rich.

Over time, he bought more than 1,000 Cadillacs, most of which he gave away to family and friends. Besides many Cadillacs, Elvis owned several Lincolns, Mercedes, Rolls Royces and a few exotics like a De Tomaso Pantera and Stutz Bearcat. He often bought dozens of cars at once. When new models arrived, he would host a private showing in his local Memphis Cadillac dealership.

Elvis even phoned the dealership manager to set up a meeting in the middle of the night when he unexpectedly had the urge to buy a new Cadillac. Today, there are numerous documented Elvis cars around but lots more he purchased but never drove. But they created the legend of the biggest rock star car collector, as well as one of the biggest entertainers in the world.

One way to attract more attention was to have the members of the band drive a custom car for promotional purposes. So, Dean Jefferies, a famous Hollywood customizer turned two 1966 Pontiac GTOs into crazy-looking Monkeemobiles. The Monkees used their custom cars for various videos and shows. Both cars were fully-functional with supercharged engines that still survive today.

10. John Lennon

As a Beatles band founding member, Lennon was one of the most important figures in the music industry in the ’60s. The Beatles were one of the biggest bands in history and Lennon was the main songwriter and composer. Because of this, he became a wealthy man before he turned 30.

Although Lennon’s first car was a Ferrari 330 he drove when he passed his driving test, he was never a true car guy. However, some car fans remember him as the proud owner of an outlandish, unique Rolls Royce.

In the late ’60s, Lennon bought a new, super-luxurious Rolls Royce Phantom. It was the most expensive, luxurious car he could find. But the formal black Phantom was not what Lennon wanted. Instead, he commissioned a painter to do a wild mural on it with vivid colors.

The car immediately became Lennon’s trademark, although Rolls Royce conservatives and purists protested it. They claimed Lennon deliberately destroyed one of the most iconic symbols of Great Britain.

Three of the coolest bearded guys in rock history is famous for four things. First, that raunchy blues-rock that never gets old. In fact, ZZ Top member, Billy Gibbons still has impeccable taste for classic American machinery and custom cars.

His most famous car is The Eliminator, a Ford hot rod they featured on various album covers and videos. However, Gibbons is also the owner of Caddzilla, a Boyd Coddington-designed Cadillac hot rod that various magazine articles have made famous. Also, he is a fan of those classic Lowriders and street rods.

When it comes to cars, rock fans have to say that Dave Grohl has disappointed them. They expected more from the cool dude who was in Nirvana and founded the Foo Fighters.

Although Tyler is not a dedicated car guy, he owns one of the fastest cars that the world has ever seen. It is a Hennessey Venom GT, an American-made supercar that produces 1,200 HP with top speeds over 200 mph. Imagine going that fast with Tyler screaming one of his songs behind the wheel.

Known for his epic hits and timeless tunes, Clapton is one of the last rock gods who is still active as a performer. In his private life, he is a dedicated car collector with impeccable taste for Ferraris. Clapton started collecting Italian stallions back in the ’70s, buying and selling dozens of them.

Recently, Clapton contacted Ferrari and the design house, Pininfarina to ask them to build him a one-off Ferrari based on the new 458 model. The custom car is a retro-looking model they named the SP12 EC. It has cost Clapton over 4.7 million dollars to build. With 11 Grammy awards and one personalized Ferrari, he’s a lucky guy.

3. Neil Young

Canadian-born singer-songwriter Neil Young is one of the most influential figures from the classic rock era. He was a member of some of the best West Coast bands and the founder of the supergroup, Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. He is also a car enthusiast dedicated to classic American iron from the 1950s.

Neil is famous for driving his classic cars daily and his new project car, the LincVolt. It is a 1959 Lincoln Continental convertible, but they removed the original drivetrain and installed electric power, creating a unique classic car with modern power. Young uses his LincVolt car on a daily basis, promoting clean energy with it.

2. Tom Petty

The music industry was in shock when the sad news of Petty’s passing arrived. One of the biggest names in contemporary American rock, he died due to a heart condition. This was tragic news for lovers of his clean rock sound and honest lyrics.

Petty wasn’t a big car guy, but he was fond of his future classic Jaguar XJS convertible, which he drove for over 20 years. He claimed that the laid-back feeling of a comfy Jaguar convertible was best suited to his lifestyle and music.
