Owning a fast car in today’s market is surprisingly easy. Though, there’s a large difference between owning a fast car and owning one of the fastest cars in the world. This article uncovers the 10 quickest street-legal vehicles available for purchase and breaks them down from the exterior to what’s under the hood. We allowed manufacturers to appear on this list multiple times, in order to showcase the true results without keeping things “fair”.

We’ve also kept it an even playing field, and have only included vehicles from major manufacturers so that there aren’t any one-offs or experiments involved. There are plenty of vehicles that can achieve land-speed records, but we want to uncover the ones that could be driving through your city. Read on to see what we’ve discovered and see if you can keep up with the best.

10. McLaren P1

Coming in at #10 is the McLaren P1. This vehicle goes from 0 to 60 in a quick 2.6 seconds and wows enthusiasts with its sleek body lines and streamlined exterior. The hood is designed for maximum speed and the custom grille adds to its interesting vibe. The headlights were made for track days and complement the vehicle’s sexy appearance. If spectators wait around and appreciate the P1 for a mere four seconds, they can watch the P1 hit 200.

The P1 features a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 plus electric motor. It has 904 horsepower and 723 pound-feet of torque, which gets it started instantly. Production of the P1 ended in December 2015 after 381 units were created and the MSRP for it is around $1.15 Million US Dollars. It is a highly desired car due to its stopped production, so it’s certainly one to pay attention to if you’re lucky enough to spot one.

9. Lamborghini Aventador LP 750-4 Superveloce

The Lamborghini Aventador goes from 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds. It has an MSRP of $497,000 and is available in 34 different color options. Its geometric body lines are aggressive and strong, but under the hood is where it really impresses. Lamborghini famously names its vehicles in Greek Mythology inspired titles. Though the Aventador is not a known name, it resembles the characteristics of the strong, historical Minotaur.

The engine is a beastly 6.5-liter, dual overhead cam 48-valve V12. It packs 740 horsepower and 509 pound-feet of torque and is the most iconic supercar on the list with its all-wheel-drive grip. It’s impressive at a stand-still, but even bold as it sprints into the distance.

8. Tesla Model S P100D with Ludicrous Speed upgrade

The 2016 Tesla Model S is the only all-electric vehicle that made this list of the 10 fastest 0-60 cars on the planet. Coming in at 2.5 seconds, it’s the fastest four-door ever built. The P100D’s debut knocked the P90D off the list, which was previously ranked at #10. With the arrival of the P100D (with added Ludicrous Speed package), Tesla has once again secured its place at the top of the electric car sector.

For how heavy the vehicle is due to battery weight, the quick 0 to 60 time of this car is extremely impressive. Thanks to the electric drive train, it has a responsive 713 pound-feet of torque and 762 horsepower. Under the hood is an engine with twin AC induction. This engine kicks out 259 horses from the front of the car and 503 coming from the rear of the vehicle.

7. Bugatti Veyron

The Veyron is an exotic staple in the supercar world. Only 450 were ever produced, which makes it appealing, rare and intriguing. With an 8.0-liter, quad-turbo-charged 16-cylinder engine, the Veyron can go from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds. With its iconic front grille, it’s easy to spot in a crowd. It seems to combine the aggressive and geometric body lines of the Aventador with more classic, rounded shapes (think: Aston Martin).

It houses 1,001 horsepower and 922 pound-feet of torque. The Guinness Book of World Records has even recognized the Super Sport as the fastest street-legal production car in the world. It has a top speed of 430 kilometers per hour. The Veyron tops this list with the most horsepower, but a few others beat it out in the race from 0 to 60.

6. Caparo T1

The Caparo T1 looks like an F1 car, but it is actually street-legal. Following its debut in 2007, only 25 were made annually. Created by Caparo Vehicle Technologies, this car goes from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds. Throughout the years, the Caparo has undergone many aesthetic changes. From an open-wheel design to the enclosed cab that it is today, it consistently wows enthusiasts with how exotic it is for a street-legal vehicle.

The Caparo is truly a “race car for the road”, as it was made by the same minds who created the McLaren F1. Being inspired by Formula 1 designers, it’s built lightweight and fast. At 575 horsepower, it’s made out of carbon fiber and leaves quite the impression.

5. Porsche 911 (991) Turbo S

The 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo houses a 3.8-liter twin-turbo flat six-cylinder engine. It kicks out 580 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque, which makes it worthy of this list. It seats four people and is known for its reliability in regard to outstanding performance. The 911 will hit 60 after a mere 2.5 seconds and has an MSRP of $160,000 USD. The vehicle is more common as a production car than any others on this list and is likely the easiest to find driving the streets.

This model of Porsche was famously used for testing with the folks at Road & Track Magazine, as well. During its 0 to 60 testing, the car was launched more than 60 times and impressed everyone in attendance. After being put through strenuous testing, it hit 2.6 seconds on multiple runs and was still roaring and ready to chomp again and again. The reliability of the Porsche 911 is hard to beat and it holds up to its grand reputation.

4. Bugatti Chiron

The Chiron is a new player on the scene. With an 8.0-liter, 16-cylinder engine that packs in 4 turbochargers, it is truly a sight to see. It has a top speed of 261 miles per hour and contains 1,180 pound-feet of torque. This eclectic model starts a $2.99 million USD. The Chiron has the most torque out of any vehicle on our list and is the second Bugatti to make an appearance in the 0 to 60 race.

The 1,500 horsepower helps it jump from 0 to 60 in 2.5 seconds and it doesn’t leave anyone asking for more. It has a futuristic exterior with the power to match and enthusiasts are looking forward to watching the future of this model unfold. It took more than 100 years for vehicles to break the 200 miles per hour mark after they were first invented. Now that the Chiron has arrived, Bugatti reports that it can travel at 261 miles per hour straight from the dealership. It makes us wonder how long it will be before the 300-mile-per-hour mark is shattered, as well. Regardless, Bugatti is pushing closer and harder than any other manufacturer at this time.

3. Ferrari LaFerrari

The LaFerrari is another staple in the industry that can hit 60 in a flash. Coming in at 2.4 seconds, this gorgeous 6.3-liter V12 plus AC electric motor will leave spectators speechless. It has a combined horsepower of 950 and houses 664 foot-pound of torque. It was the first hybrid produced by Ferrari and has an MSRP of $1.4 Million USD.

499 units were built, making it a rare but excellent sight to see. With its racing-inspired lines, it gives off a classic 24 Hours of Le Mans vibe and looks like it should be topping the list. The LaFerrari is characterized by its unique side mirrors that appear delicate. Along with the mirrors, its front end has a larger intake area than most others.

2. Ariel Atom V8

The Ariel Atom is built similarly to a go-kart, with an open-wheel design and light body. The V8 can launch from 0 to 60 within 2.3 seconds, bringing this vehicle to the #2 spot on our list. It makes a wonderful track car but remains street-legal. It handles extremely well in corners and sucks itself toward the pavement for precise handling.

Since the Atom is minimalistic and only seats two people, it’s easy to propel from a standing start. It houses 500 horsepower and has accumulated quite a cult following throughout the years.

1. Porsche 918 Spyder

The Porsche 918 Spyder tops the list with a 0-60 time of 2.2 seconds. It has an All-Wheel-Drive platform with 900 horsepower. It’s supported by a 4.6-liter V8, plus two electric motors. Utilizing the hybrid system enables the vehicle to reach maximum torque potential. It has 940 pound-feet of torque under the hood and has doubled in value over the last several years. With only 918 built, the Porsche 918 has an MSRP of $850,000 USD.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is considerably different than the 911 which ranked number five. Whereas the 911 has the iconic, rounded body of a Porsche, the 918 takes on a streamlined and geometric appeal. It appears as if it were made for speed. Only time will tell what vehicle races for the coveted number-one spot next.

Only time will tell what vehicle races for the coveted number-one spot next. As technology continues to advance and manufacturers continue to push the limits of what’s possible, we can only assume that we’ll soon be seeing the 2.0-second barrier broken.
