16 Family Haulers With More Power Than the Mustang GT

Vukasin Herbez May 13, 2019

Family SUVs shouldn’t be performance machines since nobody needs 500 HP to take their kids to school, right? Well, it appears that the market for performance SUVs is booming. In fact, almost all manufacturers have at least one crazy powerful family hauler in their lineup. Among all those superfast SUV models, this list will concentrate only on the ones with power ratings higher than 435 HP.

That’s because most people consider the 2019 Ford Mustang GT with a 5.0-liter V8 engine and 435 HP a benchmark model in terms of power. The current Mustang GT is a blisteringly fast muscle/sports car and one of the best machines in its price range. So, it will be interesting to see what five-door, SUV/Crossover models can top the Mustang in the horsepower wars.

1. Mercedes GLS 63 AMG

Do you remember the Mercedes GL Class? It was a big, expensive and heavy SUV roughly the size of a Cadillac Escalade. Well, it is now called the GLS and they gave it the AMG treatment. It is still the size of an Escalade, but now it is as fast as a Corvette, at least from the line. The reason is the bi-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine that pumps out a massive 577 HP.

And it sends that power to all four wheels through a special seven-speed automatic. Such big power meant AMG needed to re-engineer the suspension, transmission and steering to achieve a 0 to 60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. Of course, such an advanced and fast vehicle is expensive. So, if you want to have AMG power, smoke other sports cars and carry up to seven people, you have to pay over $125,000.

2. Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Although this fast SUV segment is dominated by European machines, America has its own contenders. And one of those models is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. It combines the classic SUV lines of a Grand Cherokee with the undeniable power of a 6.4-liter Hemi V8. If you want to describe this car in just a few words, it would be a “muscle SUV ready to kick some European ass.”

With 475 HP, it isn’t that powerful. But only taking 4.4 seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph is fast enough to hold its own against the competition. On the other hand, the Grand Cherokee SRT costs just above $60,000. And that means it is affordable when you compare it to those equally fast foreign machines.

3. BMW X6 M

Some BMW purists don’t consider the X6 M a proper M car since this is an SUV with an engine straight from the BMW M5 Sedan. But with 0 to 60 mph times of just four seconds, the X6 M is 0.1 seconds faster than the renewed M4 coupe. The secret of its exhilarating performance is the 4.4-liter twin-turbo with 570 HP.

Also, it has an intelligent X-drive all-wheel-drive system. Also, the X6 M is fairly aerodynamic due to the sloping roofline and rear spoiler, so it gets to its electronically limited top speed of 155 mph easily. Also, the X6 M handles somewhat better than the competition thanks to its lower height and center of gravity. And that means it can tackle the corners well, too.

4. Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport is a common SUV and one of the first models that introduced SUV performance to a large market, especially in America. For years, this was the most popular car in the segment. The current generation has good sales results, even though it isn’t the fastest or the most powerful car in its class.

The Range Rover Sport uses 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that pumps out 518 HP. This enormous power is enough to launch this big, heavy vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.0 seconds, which is fast, but not fast enough. Better yet, the Range Rover Sport has retained some of its off-road capabilities, while its competitors are strictly highway machines.

5. Porsche Macan Turbo

The introduction of the Macan meant that Porsche is considering the SUV segment as one of its main markets. The Macan is a mid-sized SUV with a performance-oriented design, drivetrain and technology. But most of all, it is one of the best cars in the segment. But the Macan Turbo is interesting since it has a 3.0-liter turbo V6 engine producing 400 HP.

Also, they mated it to a performance-calibrated seven-speed automatic and intelligent all-wheel drive. And all of that is responsible for its 4.4 second 0 to 60 mph time and 163 mph top speed. The base price for the Macan Turbo is high at $77,000.

That is steep since it is just a mid-size SUV with not that much space. However, if you want more performance and want to pay $10,000 extra, move up to the Macan Turbo Performance Package. It delivers 440 HP and a 4.2 second 0 to 60 mph time.

6. Mercedes G63 AMG

Because Mercedes conceived it as a military vehicle, the G-Class has come a long way from a barebones off-road vehicle to a luxury SUV. In fact, it gets 563 HP from its 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8. The proof of its evolution is its boxy design, rugged mechanics and stance. But everything else is modern and luxurious.

With a price of almost $150,000, this is one of the most exclusive Mercedes products. And, despite its 5,000-pound weight, it is still one of the fastest SUVs out there. The G63 AMG is capable of jumping from 0 to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. And that’s not bad for a vehicle that has been in production since 1979.

7. Porsche Cayenne Turbo

Ever since the first Cayenne Turbo appeared in the early 2000s, the market for quick, luxury SUVs was born. This Porsche with its four doors, raised body and all-wheel drive may have offended a lot of brand purists. However, it also brought so much to the segment in terms of driving dynamics, performance and prestige.

Fast forward 15 years and there is a new Cayenne Turbo for sale with even more power, faster acceleration and better road holding. The heart of this lightning-quick SUV is the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that pumps out 550 HP, sending it to an eight-speed automatic and intelligent all-wheel drive. The result is an impressive 3.7 seconds to get from 0 to 60 mph.

8. Bentley Bentayga

The world of luxurious SUVs has a new king in the form of Bentley’s super powerful, super comfortable and terribly expensive Bentayga. This $229,000 premium class SUV has two engine choices, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 542 HP or 6.0-liter W12 engine with 600 HP. Both engines make this 5,400-pound house on wheels get to 60 mph in just four seconds.

The size and performance of this car are simply mindboggling. The top speed, which they have electronically limited, is 187 mph. But theoretically, given a long enough stretch of road, the Bentayga could reach 200 mph. The performance figures are better suited to a supercar than to a five-passenger luxury SUV. But it just shows how the industry has advanced over the years.

9. BMW X5 M

When the first X5 appeared in 1999, it was a big step for BMW. Not only it was their first SUV, but it was a fresh look at the SUV class. The X5 offered prime driving dynamics and road holding closer to a luxury sedan than to a bulky SUV. Almost 20 years later, we have the 570 HP X5 M with a 4.4-liter of twin-turbo V8, as well as a world-class chassis and suspension.

The X5 M is still one of the sportier cars in the segment. And not just because of its immense power and 4.1 second 0 to 60 mph times, but because BMW engineered this model as a true M Performance car. This means it has sharp handling, perfect braking and feels more like an M5 than an X5 SUV. And that is a great compliment to the BMW engineers.

10. Lamborghini Urus

Remember the Lamborghini LM002 featured first on this list? A full 35 years later, there is another crazy fast, sublimely expensive performance SUV from Bologna in the form of the newly introduced Urus. You might be surprised to find that Bentley Bentayga and Urus have a lot in common in terms of mechanics and chassis architecture. That’s because Lamborghini and Bentley are both owned by Volkswagen.

But these two models are clearly different in many ways, including styling, performance and market niche. However, the Urus is powered by a 4.0-liter V8 with 641 HP and it is somewhat lower and lighter than the Bentayga. This means that the Urus can reach 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, topping 190 mph. But you’d better bring your checkbook since the price is over $230,000.

11. Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

Do you want to go 180 mph and get to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds in an SUV? Perhaps you don’t have $200,000 plus to spend on an exotic car with space for five people and their luggage. Don’t worry, because we have just the car for you. Do you remember the Grand Cherokee SRT that delivered 475 HP?

Jeep recently introduced an even crazier version powered by a 707 HP supercharged Hemi from the Dodge Challenger Hellcat. The new Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the SUV version of the Challenger Hellcat. It comes with all important features like the engine and transmission perfectly transplanted into an SUV body.

Also, they upgraded the suspension and braking, but the rest is the same. The car is one of the most capable SUVs on the market. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds and best of all is the $85,000 price tag. That is a third of what a Lamborghini Urus costs. But best of all, you get more space and more power.

12. Audi SQ7

The Q7 luxury SUV is one of the best products that Audi sells in America. It looks like the company perfectly understood the need for a big, fast, comfortable cruiser, so Q7s are as popular there as in Europe. However, for performance-oriented buyers, Audi offers the SQ7, a 435 HP-powered luxury locomotive on wheels.

However, this model barely made this list since it has the exact same power as the benchmark Mustang GT 5.0. The SQ7 packs all the possible luxury items along with the mighty 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8. This is the same engine as in the Bentayga or Urus, but they detuned it to 435 HP.

Perhaps Audi felt pressured to keep the power level down, so other Volkswagen models could use the full potential of this powerful unit. However, despite a drop in power, the SQ7 is capable enough to find itself on this list. The 0 to 60 mph time is achievable in just five seconds and the base price is close to $100,000.

13. Mercedes GLC 63 S

This strange SUV that Mercedes makes looks a lot like the BMW X6 is the GLC-Class. It is a vision of a coupe SUV with a big performance portfolio. For European buyers, Mercedes offers this strange car in the AMG version with 510 HP. Although it isn’t available in America yet, just look at the numbers.

The 4.0-liter bi-turbo engine from AMG GTR delivers 510 HP to all four wheels over its intelligent AWD system and nine-speed automatic transmission. The 0 to 60 mph time is 3.7 seconds and they’ve electronically controlled the top speed at 155 mph. With a base price of over $100,000, it is expensive, but those wealthy buyers will line up to buy it.

14. Range Rover Sport SVR

As the defining car of the SUV segment, the Range Rover couldn’t sit still and watch as other cars stole its thunder. So, they introduced the mighty Sport SVR. With a heavily supercharged 5.0-liter V8, a host of chassis, suspension and braking modifications and unique trim details, the SVR is a true performance SUV beast.

They mated the 575 HP engine to an eight-speed automatic transmission capable of propelling this heavy wagon to a 4.3 second 0 to 60 mph time. Also, it gets up to 176 mph at its top speed. This is mighty fast but not as fast as some of the competitors. If the Range Rover lost a little weight, it would be the fastest since the Sport SVR weighs over 5,000 pounds.

15. Dodge Durango SRT

Do you need a 4.4 second 0 to 60 mph SUV with 475 HP and the ability to carry seven passengers? How about a small school bus for when your kids are late for school and you need to get them there in a hurry. If that’s the case, then you need a Dodge Durango SRT. With 6.4-liter Hemi and 475 HP, this is a pure Dodge muscle car in an SUV package.

In contrast to the other vehicles on this list, which are mostly useless as real SUVs, the Dodge is quite capable. Not only it is among the biggest and has three-row seating, but it can also carry and tow the biggest loads, too. And that makes it practical and usable. But best of all is the price since it starts at just $64,000.

16. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

Until Ferrari makes an SUV, this is the closest thing they’ve got, which is the new Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio. With a 2.9-liter turbocharged V6 engine they derived from Ferrari’s turbo V8, this is a prime example of Italian charm with brutal power in the SUV class. The new Stelvio is an important model for the factory, especially on the American market.

This is a mid-size SUV, but in Quadrifoglio trim, it is a sports car. The turbo V6 produces 505 HP. And with its 50/50 weight distribution, perfectly tuned suspension, quick gearbox, and surge brakes, the Stelvio is one SUV missile. The 0 to 60 time is just 3.9 seconds and the top speed is a lofty 177 mph. The car will be for sale soon at a base price of over $100,000.

These are the 16 family haulers with more power than the Mustang GT. If you are in the market for an SUV that can haul and go fast, one of these should fill the bill. And best yet, they come in a variety of price ranges, so you should be able to find one you can afford.
