Your Jeep Wrangler Could Catch Fire While Parked — Here’s What You Need to Do Right Now

Kalterina June 10, 2026

If you own a Jeep Wrangler from the 2021 through 2025 model years, stop reading and take action. A major safety recall has just been issued that affects nearly 800,000 Wranglers across the United States — and the danger is real, documented, and happening right now.

How Many Wranglers Are Affected?

The safety recall affects an estimated 787,887 model year 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler SUVs built between June 24, 2020, and December 2, 2024. This is not a minor or precautionary recall — it covers nearly five full model years of one of America’s most popular SUVs. FOX 5 DC

What Is the Actual Problem?

An electrical connection within the electric hydraulic power steering pump system can develop excessive resistance, creating enough heat to melt components and potentially ignite a fire. Autoguide.com

Here is what makes this especially alarming: the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring may overheat and cause a vehicle fire even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition in the “Off” position. Your Wrangler does not need to be running to catch fire. Edmunds

It was found that out-of-tolerance parts could require excessive insertion force during assembly, potentially causing connector terminals to spread or preventing the electrical connector from fully seating. Stellantis also identified instances where terminals could move out of position within the connector. Both scenarios can create a loose electrical connection, leading to increased electrical resistance and heat buildup, which could melt the connectors and potentially cause a fire. Autoguide.com

How Long Has This Been Going On?

This issue did not appear overnight. In 2023 and early 2024, Stellantis investigated fires in some Wrangler and Gladiator vehicles but closed the investigation due to the low rate of fires. In August 2024, it reopened the investigation after an increase in incidents originating from the suspect electrical connection. CNBC

Stellantis said it worked extensively to determine the root cause over more than a year through vehicle buybacks, part returns and analysis, CT scans and X-rays, material analysis, and other testing before determining in late May the issue posed an unreasonable risk to safety. CNBC

By the time the recall was issued, NHTSA was already aware of 51 fires and one injury likely due to this issue. NHTSA

Does This Affect Gas, Diesel, and 4xe Models?

Yes — all of them. This recall affects model year 2021-2025 Jeep Wrangler vehicles equipped with gas, diesel, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrains. No matter which engine is under your hood, if your Wrangler falls within those model years, you need to check your VIN. Mopar

What Warning Signs Should You Watch For?

Owners may get a “service power steering” warning notification or experience a loss of power steering assist. If you have seen either of these in your Wrangler recently, treat it as an urgent warning and contact your dealer immediately — do not wait for the official recall letter to arrive. Edmunds

What Should You Do Right Now?

Owners are being advised to park their vehicle outside and away from structures until it is repaired. All repair work will be done at Jeep dealers free of charge. Edmunds

Do not park your Wrangler in your garage. Do not park it next to other vehicles or near your home. Until the repair is completed, treat it as a fire hazard.

When Will the Fix Be Available?

The company plans to notify dealers about the recall on or around June 11, 2026. Owner notification letters are expected to begin mailing on or around July 9, 2026. A remedy is expected no later than July. For questions, owners can contact Stellantis customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FOX 5 DCNews Nation Now
