How to Order the Rivian R2: The Complete Guide

Kalterina June 11, 2026

Rivian started public R2 deliveries on June 9, 2026, and opened order invitations to reservation holders the same day. If you haven’t reserved yet, here’s exactly what to do. If you already have a reservation, here’s what happens next.

Step 1: Place Your Reservation ($100, Fully Refundable)

Go to rivian.com and navigate to the R2 page. The reservation deposit is $100 and is fully refundable at any time — you can cancel and get your money back before configuring and confirming a final order.

Your reservation timestamp matters. Rivian is sending order invitations on a rolling basis, and earlier reservations get priority — with some geographic and loyalty-based exceptions (more on that below).

If you already own an R1T or R1S, you qualify for priority access. Rivian offers R1 owners priority delivery as a loyalty benefit, provided you use the same email address as your existing Rivian account when reserving.

Step 2: Understand the Order Invitation Process

Rivian doesn’t let you simply walk up and configure an R2 immediately. Instead, the company sends order invitations on a rolling basis. Once you receive your invitation, you’ll be able to:

  • Select your trim (currently only the Performance is available to configure)
  • Choose your exterior color, wheels, and interior
  • Confirm your order and finalize payment details

Rivian has committed that by the end of June 2026, all existing reservation holders will receive an estimated timeline for when they can expect their order invitation. That’s not the invitation itself — it’s an estimate of when it’s coming.

Priority factors for receiving your invitation sooner:

  • Earlier reservation timestamp (first-come, first-served is the primary factor)
  • Proximity to a Rivian Service + Demo Center
  • Current R1 vehicle owner (loyalty priority)
  • Expiring lease or loan on another vehicle
  • Random selection component for geographic distribution

Step 3: Know Which Trim Is Available When

This is critical. You can only order what Rivian is currently building.

Available now: R2 Performance with Launch Package — $57,990 Late 2026: R2 Premium — $53,990 Early 2027: R2 Standard Long Range — $48,490 Summer 2027: R2 Standard — $44,990

If you receive an invitation today, the only configurable trim is the Performance. Buyers holding reservations for the Premium, Standard Long Range, or base Standard will receive invitations only when those trims enter production. You cannot skip ahead to a lower trim that isn’t available yet.

Rivian says that if a customer prefers to wait for a lower-priced trim rather than buying the available Performance, they can do so without losing their reservation priority.

Step 4: Configure Your R2 Performance

Once your invitation arrives, you’ll configure your vehicle through your Rivian account. Here’s what’s currently available on the Performance:

Exterior colors:

  • Launch Green (exclusive to Performance Launch Package)
  • Catalina Blue
  • Limestone
  • El Cap Granite
  • Glacier White
  • Esker Silver (included as standard on Performance)
  • Additional colors may be added

Wheel options:

  • 21-inch Sport wheels (standard, all-season tires)
  • 20-inch all-terrain wheels with BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain tires (optional — excellent for off-road use, reduces range to 307 miles)

Interior:

  • Black Crater Signature (dark, with Birch wood accents)
  • Coastal Cloud Signature (lighter tone, with Birch wood accents)

There are no further major option packages beyond the wheel/tire choice and color selection — Rivian keeps configuration simple compared to some competitors.

Step 5: Expect Delivery in 2-6 Weeks

Once you confirm your R2 Performance order, Rivian estimates delivery within two to six weeks depending on your location relative to the Normal, Illinois factory. Customers near Rivian Service + Demo Centers may receive their vehicles faster.

Rivian will contact you to schedule a delivery appointment, which can be either at a Rivian Space location or, in some cases, delivered to your home.

What If You Haven’t Reserved Yet?

No reservation? You can still test drive an R2 through Rivian’s Demo Drive program, available at Rivian Space locations beginning June 9, 2026. Find your nearest Rivian Space at rivian.com.

You can also place a new reservation today at $100. You’ll join the queue behind existing reservation holders, but the queue is moving — Rivian is targeting 20,000 to 25,000 R2 deliveries by end of 2026, which means a large number of vehicles will be produced and delivered this year.

The R2 Warranty

Every R2 comes with Rivian’s standard warranty package:

  • Basic vehicle warranty: 4 years / 50,000 miles
  • Battery and drivetrain: 8 years / 175,000 miles with 70% capacity retention guarantee
  • Rust/corrosion: 8 years / unlimited miles on body panels

The battery warranty is among the most generous in the segment — significantly better than many competitors who offer 8 years / 100,000 miles. The 175,000-mile coverage means the battery is protected well into the vehicle’s useful life for most owners.

Financing and Leasing

Rivian offers financing through its own financial services as well as third-party lenders. Lease options are available. Monthly payment estimates vary significantly based on credit score, down payment, and loan term — use Rivian’s configurator for real numbers once your invitation arrives.

Federal EV tax credit: The R2’s eligibility for the federal $7,500 EV tax credit depends on your income, the vehicle’s final assembly location (Normal, Illinois qualifies), and current legislation. Tax credit rules have been subject to ongoing policy changes — verify current eligibility with a tax professional or at fueleconomy.gov before making financial decisions based on the credit.

Key Dates to Know

  • June 9, 2026: First public deliveries began. Order invitations opened to reservation holders on rolling basis.
  • By end of June 2026: All reservation holders receive estimated order invitation timeline.
  • Late 2026: R2 Premium deliveries begin.
  • Early 2027: R2 Standard Long Range deliveries begin.
  • Summer 2027: R2 Standard (base) deliveries begin.

One More Thing: Demo Drives Are Available Now

If you’re on the fence, Rivian is offering public demo drives at all Rivian Space locations as of June 9. You do not need a reservation to test drive the R2. This is the best way to assess whether the vehicle’s personality — its size, its feel, its off-road character — is right for you before committing even a refundable $100.
