There were some of these cars that were so rare they completely disappeared from the market. We looked back at those prehistoric relics of the muscle car era.
1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1
The Camaro has always had special edition models, but there were some that were extremely rare. The ZL1 was produced in very low numbers and it was special order. The ZL1 nameplate was designed for the racetrack, which is why you seldom saw one on the road. There were only 69 units that were ever put into production and there are even less of them still around.
1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible
Plymouth Barracuda was such a popular muscle car that there was even a hit song named after it. The Hemi Cuda Convertible was a rarer option of the car that was designed for the open road. The car was so rare that there were only 14 examples that were ever put into production. With the Hemi engine under the hood this muscle car meant business.
1967 Shelby GT500 Super Snake
The Shelby name and Ford are synonymous with each other. The legendary race car driver has always put his name on special edition Ford products. The GT500 Super Snake was the epiphany of design and performance with a special edition piant job. The Super Snake was capable of reaching speeds up to 150MPH and there was only one example built.
1971 Pontiac GTO Judge Convertible
The GTO itself was a rare car, but the Judge was a whole new level of performance. The Judge convertible was produced in a small batch of 17 cars, making it super rare. The 455 cubic inch HO V8 engine was a groundbreaking step up in performance. The 355 horsepower was impressive even by today’s high standards.
1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS 454 LS6
The Chevrolet Chevelle is often credited as one of the most awe-inspiring muscle cars on the road. The 454 cubic inch LS6 V8 engine produced an awe-inspiring amount of performance at the wheels. The car was a downright monster on the track, and only a limited number of this Chevelle model.
1969 Dodge Charger Daytona
The Dodge Charger itself was an awesome muscle car, generating a lot of buzz for Dodge and Chrysler. But, it was the Charger Daytona that crafted a whole new reputation for speed in the racing world. Boasting an aerodynamic nose and a 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 engine under the hood, only 503 units were produced.
1970 Buick GSX Stage 1
Although Buick has long been considered a luxury brand, there are a few times that they dipped their toes in the performance realm. The 1970 Buick GSX Stage 1 was one such ride that completely transformed the automotive industry. There were just 678 units produced and the GSX boasted a whopping 360 horsepower.
1971 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi
There is a reason that the V8 Hemi engine is an iconic part of the automotive industry. The performance and reliability of it was downright legendary. The 1971 Plymouth Road Runner Hemi was a prime example of this. There were only 55 examples of this car produced which makes it one of the rarest muscle cars on the road.
1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429
The Mustang Boss 429 was designed specifically for the NASCAR circuit. The car had such a high level of success on the track that Ford decided to authorize a very small number of 859 production vehicles. The 429 cubic inch V8 engine was a game changer and gave the Boss 429 some serious power.
1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88
You don’t generally think of the Corvette as a powerful muscle car. But the 1968 Chevrolet Corvette L88 changed all that. The limited edition performance car was powered by a 427 cubic inch V8 engine. There were 80 units that were produced for the single year. The L88 was one of the rarest Corvette models.
1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30
Oldsmobile like Buick was long considered a luxury brand, but this nameplate also sold quite a few performance cars. The 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30 was long considered one of the most impressive muscle cars on the road. There were only 262 units produced and the horsepower was rated at 370 horsepower.
1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
The Pontiac Firdbird Trans Am was sold alongside the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro. The trio of pony cars changed the market for affordable muscle cars. The 400 cubic inch V8 engine was extremely powerful, and there were 697 units produced. The 1969 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is one of the rarest pony cars.
1970 Dodge Challenger R/T Hemi
The Challenger R/T Hemi was the epiphany of performance at the time that it was released. There were only 287 units of this car produced, so why so rare? The 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 engine produced a staggering amount of horsepower. Coupled with the unique green and black paint job the Challenger R/T Hemi was one of a kind.
1969 AMC AMX/3
AMC used to be a heavyweight in the American automotive marketplace. The 1969 AMC AMX/3 was so rare that there were only 6 prototypes built. The car had an emphasis on speed and handling, in a way, AMC was attempting to build a domestic Porsche. The car received notable press coverage but the company never put it into production.
1967 Dodge Coronet WO23
Few muscle cars were specifically designed for drag racing, but that was the case with the 1967 Dodge Coronet WO23. The 426 Hemi V8 was under the hood and the platform was designed specifically for the drag strip. The lightweight components focused on performance and there were only 55 units produced.
1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator
The Mercury Cougar shared a platform with the Ford Mustang which made it quite notable. The 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator was powered by a 428 cubic inch V8 engine, and there were only 2,267 units ever produced. The 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator was by far one of the most impressive variations of the Cougar.
1969 Dodge Dart GTS 440
The Dodge Challenger often gets the credit for being the most well-known muscle car in the Dodge roost, but the Dart was also an effective muscle car. The 1969 Dodge Dart GTS 440 was a limited edition muscle with 640 units produced. It had a short wheel base and 375 horsepower under the hood which put it in the same league as the Challenger.
1968 Ford Torino GT Fastback
The Ford Torino doesn’t always get the credit that it deserves in the automotive world. But the 1968 Ford Torino GT Fastback was just as impressive as any Chevy or Dodge. The 335 horsepower under the hood packed a punch. The Torino GT was produced in very low numbers making it quite a rare ride.
Dodge Super Bee
Dodge had a lot of unique muscle cars during the 1960s, but the Super Bee was one of the most popular. The Super Bee had a unique exterior with a one-of-a-kind paint job that didn’t look like anything else on the market. The Super Bee Hemi was so rare that there were only four units ever sold to the public.
1963 Chevrolet Impala Z11
Did you ever think that there was a performance version of the Impala? Well, there was and it was the Z11. This rare version of the Impala was produced in very low numbers, only 57 of them to be exact. The car had a lightweight frame and a powerful 409 cubic-inch V8 engine. The Z11 also had a 4.11:1 Positraction rear end.
