10 of the Best and Coolest Supercars Made in Germany

Vukasin Herbez February 22, 2025

Germany is an immensely important country when it comes to the car industry. Not only because this country invented the automobile in 1886, but because it is one of the biggest forces in the business and home to so many respectable manufacturers. In short, German brands produce all kinds of cars, from inexpensive economy models to the high-end limousines and sports car. Interestingly, German brands (apart from Porsche) were always reserved towards the supercar class. Italians, British and even American brands produced supercars but the Germans stayed true to their roots. However, there are still a few very important and brutally fast German supercars and today we will tell you all about them.

1. Dauer 962

Dauer 962

If you ever thought about how it would be like to drive a Le Mans racing car on the street, well, here is the answer in form of the crazy Dauer 962 Le Mans. This car is possibly the ultimate supercar ever built since it is so extreme and fast that it could put most of the latest and fastest supercars to shame despite the fact it is over 20 years old.

Dauer 962

Built from 1993 to 1997 by German company Dauer, this supercar is a race car with some trunk space and license plates. Dauer 962 produced 750 hp from its 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six engine. The performance figures were also crazy. The 0 to 60 mph time was 2.8-seconds and the top speed was 251 mph. But the problem with this model was that it was too much for most owners.

2. Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

In the early `50, Mercedes was in ruins, the production was low and the factory slowly recovered from devastating World War II. Nobody expected that it could produce one of the finest sports cars of all time and fastest production cars of the `50s – the 300 SL Gullwing. This unusual creation was arguably the first supercar in the world. It transcendent the limits of sports car class and went beyond in design, power, and technology.

Mercedes 300SL Gullwing

Using space frame chassis, fuel-injected straight-six engine, host of components and race-proven parts, Mercedes created masterpiece with unusual opening doors and fantastic performance. With just 240 HP on tap, Mercedes 300 SL was 150 mph car all day long but some even claimed that it could reach 160 mph.

3. Lotec Sirius

Lotec Sirius

Lotec Sirius is one of the most obscure European supercars and it was produced by Lotec Company in the early 2000s. The prototype caused much attention when it was first shown in 2001 but ever since the news about this crazy supercar was pretty scarce. Some say that only 2 examples were made and some say that Sirius never progressed beyond the prototype stage.

Lotec Sirius

However, Sirius is still one of the most powerful and interesting machines out there. The heart is a twin-turbo Mercedes derived V12 engine which develops around 1300 HP. With a 5-speed manual transmission and just 2800 pounds of curb weight, the Sirius is unbelievably fast. The 0 to 60 mph sprint takes less than 3.7 seconds and the top speed is amazing 285 mph!

4. Isdera Imperator 108i

Isdera Imperator 108i

Isdera is a small and ultra-exclusive manufacturer of supercars based in Germany. It was founded by Eberhard Schultz, ex-Mercedes engineer, in 1969. Over the years, Isdera produced only a few models all of which used many Mercedes parts, engines and components and the company became known for a very exclusive production approach.

Isdera Imperator 108i

It was introduced in 1984 and remained in production until 1993 during which time 30 examples were produced. The car had space frame construction with a plastic body and Gullwing doors – timeless and everyone`s favorite supercar detail. Behind the driver was a Mercedes produced V8 engine with 5.0 liters of displacement.

5. Kodiak F1

Kodiak F1

Although produced in only one example, Kodiak F1 is not a kit car. A German supercar is a typical machine from the `80s with specific wedge-shaped design, rear-mounted V8 engine from Corvette or Mercedes and convincing performance.

Kodiak F1

Unfortunately, despite being thoroughly engineered and with enough power, Kodiak F1 was doomed by its price of over $100,000 in time when Ferrari cost half of that.

6. Gumpert Apollo

Gumpert Apollo

Not the prettiest supercar ever produced but definitely, one of the most brutal, Gumpert Apollo was a brainchild of German engineers. Using Audi`s 4.2-liter V8 and carbon fiber chassis, F1-syle suspension and aggressive aerodynamics package, Apollo produced truly incredible performance.

Gumpert Apollo

The Apollo was designed to be a missing link between the race car and road-going supercar, something that it did quite well. However, the market was looking for more comfortable machines and Gumpert Company soon closed its doors.

7. Mercedes C111

Mercedes C111

Although never a production model, Mercedes C111 was one of the most famous German supercars introduced in the early `70s. This orange classic was designed as a rolling test laboratory for different engine technologies and aerodynamic research.

Mercedes C111

Fitted with Gullwing doors, C111 concepts were equipped with various prototype engines including Wankel rotary units as well as few high-performance types of diesel. There was even a V8-powered version, as well.

8. Audi R8

Audi R8

The sportscar world was very surprised when Audi presented the first-generation R8. Nobody expected such a bold move from Audi and such a great sports car. The Audi R8 is a supercar with its mid-mounted V8 engine and design but at sports car prices that are making it available to a wider audience.

Audi R8

The engine itself is a true piece of art, a naturally aspirated 4.2 liter V8 and 420 HP. Packed in lightweight body and mated to perfect dual-clutch gearbox, R8 V8 was capable of attacking some Italian exotics with no problem.

9. BMW M1

BMW M1

Although M1 was not a commercial success and it sold in only 453 copies, this limited production sports car was tremendously important for the brand and BMW`s future. It is also one of the best known wedge-shaped supercars ever made.

BMW M1

The heart of this sports car was BMW`s famous M88 six-cylinder engine with 3.5-liters of displacement, advanced fuel injection and 273 HP which was a pretty high number for the standards of the day.

10. AMG Concept I

AMG Concept I

The latest and greatest car by AMG is fantastic and out of this world. The Concept I was introduced a couple of weeks before on Frankfurt Motor Show, and this car is, in fact, the future of hypercars with F1 technology adjusted for street use and covered with a gorgeous body. Under the carbon fiber body panels, there is a 1.6-liter V6 engine straight out of Formula One car paired with four electric engines.

AMG Concept I

The power output of the gasoline V6 engine is unbelievable 670 hp and the total output, with the electric engines, is over 1000 hp, which is plain insane. AMG didn`t release much information about this car and we know that the top speed is well over 200 mph mark but we can only speculate 0 to 60 mph times.
