You bought the Jeep Wrangler 4xe because it offered the best of both worlds — legendary off-road capability with the efficiency of a plug-in hybrid. But right now, that plug-in system is the very thing putting your vehicle at risk. A serious fire recall is in effect, and the charging cable you connect every night may be making things worse.
Which Wrangler 4xe Models Are Affected?
Just over 228,000 Wrangler 4xe models from 2020 through 2025 are affected by the recall, caused by manufacturing faults in the high-capacity battery used in these models. Pickup Truck +SUV Talk
The primary issue involves the high-voltage lithium-ion battery packs manufactured by Samsung SDI. If you own a 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, or 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe, your vehicle is included in this recall. Timothy Abeel
What Is Wrong With the Battery?
In rare cases, the battery pack may contain cells with separator damage. This separator damage, when combined with other internal chemical or thermal interactions, can cause the high-voltage battery to short-circuit and catch fire. MoparInsiders
The fire can happen at any moment. The faults may cause the battery to catch fire while driving or parked. There is no warning light, no pre-fire alert, and no way for the driver to predict when or if it will happen. NHTSA’s official recall information confirms there is no identification of any warning that can occur before the event. Pickup Truck +SUV TalkPickup Truck +SUV Talk
Why You Must Stop Charging Your 4xe Tonight
This is the single most important instruction for every Wrangler 4xe owner right now. Vehicle risk is reduced when the battery charge level is depleted. Accordingly, owners are advised to refrain from recharging. Stellantis Media
The logic is straightforward — a fully charged high-voltage battery contains far more energy to fuel a fire than a depleted one. Because the fire risk remains whether the vehicle is parked or being driven, owners are being strongly advised not to recharge their vehicles and to park them outdoors, away from buildings, garages, or other vehicles until the issue is resolved. MoparInsiders
Do not charge your Wrangler 4xe at home tonight. Do not use a public charging station. Do not plug in at work. The risk is real and the instruction from NHTSA and Stellantis is clear.
Previous Fixes Have Failed — This Is the Third Recall for the Same Problem
If you had your Wrangler 4xe repaired under a previous recall, do not assume you are safe. On July 3, 2025, FCA US opened a new investigation after receiving reports of fires originating from the high-voltage battery in certain Wrangler PHEVs outside the scope of the previous recall, as well as reports of fires in vehicles which had already received the prior remedy. MoparInsiders
NHTSA Campaign Number 23V-787 first covered 32,125 Wrangler 4xe SUVs with defective battery packs. A year later, NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-720 expanded the recall to 154,032 vehicles. Dealers were instructed to install an update to the Battery Management System to detect early warning signs of failure and deactivate the defective battery module. Despite these efforts, additional fires were reported, leading to the most recent and largest recall. The Lemon Law Experts
Three recalls. Three attempts to fix the same problem. If your Wrangler 4xe was previously repaired, it still needs the new remedy under campaign 25V-741.
There May Also Be a Sand Contamination Problem in Your Engine
Battery fire aside, some Wrangler 4xe owners are facing a second, completely separate recall. A separate November 2025 recall affects 112,859 newer 4xe models due to leftover sand in engine blocks that can cause engine fires. Owners have described receiving notice that their vehicle engine may be contaminated with sand from the casting process, with potential outcomes including fire or engine failure. If you own a 2024 or 2025 Wrangler 4xe, check your VIN for both recalls — you may be on two lists at once.
What Is the Repair and How Much Will It Cost You?
Nothing. The fix is a software update to the battery pack control module that detects separator damage. If a fault is detected, the system will display a check engine light and disable charging, then the battery will be replaced at no cost. Timothy Abeel
Full battery replacement if needed, all labor, all parts — covered entirely by Jeep at no cost to you.
