Although “SUV” stands for Sport Utility Vehicle, most SUVs on the market don’t have much sportiness in them. Simply, the definition of an SUV nowadays is a comfy, front wheel drive wagon with as much space as possible. They come with all the creature comforts and infotainment systems, so they are not exactly sporty vehicles, by any means.
However, there are quite a few SUVs on the market that deliver surprising performance and 0 to 60 mph times like those high-priced exotics. Advancements in traction controls, massive power and intelligent all wheel drive systems can launch those full-size SUVs to prohibited speeds in the blink of an eye. Even though all fast SUVs are big, heavy vehicles, their weight prevents wheel spins and aids in better traction.
This list of the world`s fastest SUVs shows just how far the industry has gone. This class of vehicles has grown from those bulky, slow SUVs of the past, to today’s SUVs capable of beating a Ferrari in a straight line. Unfortunately, almost all the models on this list are quite expensive. But people seem to prefer them more than those regular sports cars. Read on to learn more about these fast and furious SUVs.

Mercedes GLS 63 AMG
Do you remember the Mercedes GL Class? It was a big, expensive and heavy SUV roughly the size of a Cadillac Escalade. Mercedes now called it the GLS and they gave it the AMG treatment. It is still the size of an Escalade, but now it is as fast as the Corvette, at least from the line. The reason is the bi-turbo 5.5-liter V8 engine that pumps out a massive 577 HP.
It sends them to all four wheels through a special seven-speed automatic. To boost the power, AMG re-engineered the suspension, transmission and steering. This helped the GLS achieve a 0 to 60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. Such an advanced, fast vehicle is expensive, but if you want to smoke other sports cars yet carry up to seven people, you have to pay over $125,000.
