Tour de France Mustangs
The first official Mustang racing outing wasn’t in America as most people think, but in Europe in the Tour de France race in 1964. Ford of Britain entered three cars with minimal preparation. They figured that participating in this event would be the perfect marketing for the new pony car. And they were right.
The fleet of three shiny new Mustangs caused much interest from the motoring press and the spectators. The Mustang won the 4,000-mile event much to the surprise of Ford of Britain and the racing experts. That was the first official win in the long, successful career of this model.
